Til Death Do Us Part: Former NFL Linebacker Chris Draft Loses His Wife To Cancer After One Month

By Tastemaker — December 29, 2011

It’s a modern day fairytale mixed with all the ingredients that make up one of the greatest love stories of 2011. In one day over 12,ooo people had been touched by the story of Chris and Keasha Draft.

It wasn’t until after reading about the recent passing of Keasha Rutledge Draft, wife of former NFL Linebacker Chris Draft, that I realized that true love still exist. According to sources close to the couple, Keasha had been diagnosed with cancer yet Chris loved her throughout her illness and granted her wish to become his bride on November 27, 2011. Sadly, Keasha lost her fight with cancer on Tuesday December 27, 2011; ironically one month after marrying Chris.

Atlanta photographer and videographer Keven Williams of KRJ Productions, documented their ceremony and since, his video has went viral on social media leaving people to comment and question their own relationships. Chris may have lost his beautiful bride, but what he may not know is that his unconditional love for his wife allowed others to see what “for better or for worse” really means. Williams noted ” …He [Chris] makes me want to be a better man and his foundation is excellent as well. Keasha’s spirit lives on through this video.” Another viewer responded to the video saying “…Makes you really think about silly arguments and misunderstandings you have. Just love someone and let that bet it. I am so moved. Thanks for sharing.”

Our hearts and prayers are with the Draft and Rutledge families during their time of grief. We can’t help but to think that this story will inspire love, and strengthen marriages. Draft, also asked Williams to put together a photo montage that shows those that didn’t know Keasha just how special she was. Check out the montage below. Tell us your inspirational love story.

You know when I seen this story, I could not stop watching it. Now this is love! Both two beautiful people and they both deserved each other. If I was in the movie making business this would be one movie or tv production that I would put out there. I knew love was deeper and their love just showed me that. Now I truly understand what "for better or for worst" really mean. I hear people want to take that out of their vowels and this no joke. Chris and Keasha you are a blessing to me. You guys were so happy and that's the kind of real love that I am looking for. It's so weird because looking at you all's wedding makes me happy. We always complain about our little ailment's, Keasha you make me want to put what's going on in my life behind me and keep pushing. I've had two people in my family that died of lung cancer and it really is not joke. But all through your pain you kept laughing. God Bless! Chris I only wish that the angel that is around you that I could have that same angel around me. You are blessed.

This was truly a remarkable story that definitely defines what true love is. I lost my husband of 4 years in March of 2005. My heart goes out to you because you lost your wife and I personally know how it feels to loose a spouse. No one really never knows how a individual in this situation feels, unless they are faced with this same situation. Always remember Chris that you loved Kesha, but God loved her best. She is sleeping peacefully where the sun is always shinning and the grass is always green. But most of all she is with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.Always remember to trust God during this trying time because he will never leave us nor will he forsake us, he will be with us until the end of the world. i do not know why God allowed this to happen, but I do know that it was for some purpose in which God needed Kesha more. She will forever be in your and your memories will remain with you for a lifetime

If this video taught me anything, it is that I want a love that will endure like theirs. I will settle for nothing less. Even though GOD saw fit to call her home, she was lucky enough to find a love so deep. May she rest in peace....

This is a very touching story, when it seems that true love no longer exists, especially with athletes...this story can provide hope that all is not lost. GOD blessed Chris with Keasha...a man that finds a wife, finds a good thing. She was also blessed to have Chris. This is truly inspirational and I pray for GOD's continuing Grace over the Draft and Rutledge families..

Although, this beautiful young lady had to endure the pain of this horrible disease, she was still so very blessed with unconditional love here on earth and is now "living" eternal and really experiencing what we strive to only get. Get it Keasha! Chris, you are truly a man of value, character and strength. What a wonderful example that you have set and definitely set the bar for so many. God is definitely pleased with you young man. God has blessed you with such a beautiful heart and it appears that she made it easy for you to love her. Chris you ROCK! TEAM DRAFT!!

If only I could stop crying long enough to type this letter. The love shared between those two, was really awesome. You can see it in the way that he looks at her, his heart was hers until death did they part. Sometimes I wonder if cancer will be the end of my life. Then I fight that thought. Regardless of how my life ends, I think my husband will love me as much as Chris loved Kaesha. He never fails to let me know how much he loves and needs me and I want to be around for many years to come, just to hear him say, "Honey, I love you now and until the end of time."

Its great to know that somebody can love a person so much that has a condition like that. I currently know somebody with cancer and believe me its not an easy task trying to be there for them but with God and prayer im still holding on to be there for them...they have their moments but I still try to influence them to keep on pushing and letting them know everything will be ok. I think the most important part to them is just being by their side! God bless the family of the former Falcon and wife!

Words cannot explain how I'm feeling this moment. I watched both videos, the 1st wen she was living life full of joy, haivng a good time. Laughing, smiling, joking around, and showing loving embraces to all that knew her. When I looked at the video the day Keasha and Chris exchanged their vows, a piece of my heart dropped. This vibrant beautiful young woman life was taaking tool by her illness. I cried the moment I seen her in the wheel chair, from the time she was getting dressed, to sitting in the chair inside the church exchanging vows, even pouring all her strength that she had to enjoy her reception. As a woman of God, sunday school teacher, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, firend to many, love is a very powerful concept of everyones life. In today's society people take love for granted, and use it as their own personal tool. When you learn how to love someone unconditionally, the agape love that God want us to have, then you know you have grown spiritually. I turly admire Chirs for his growth in attitude, behavior, emotions, mind, spirit, and responsibility. Chirs, honor and valor of true love for Keasha speaks true matters of the heart. My love, blessings, and heart goes to both families. Chris, your forever in my prayers man-of-God. My the Lord bless you abundantly, and you continue to prosper in journey called life. I know that your wife is smiling upon you and thanking you for giving her a beautiful lasting moment. Be Blessed

Just looking at the video of moments of her life told me that she was an awesome person. Thank you so much for sharing this story. It is a true reminder that life is too short and we really should treat each day, each hour, each minute, each second as if it's our last. Chris, I don't know you but thank you for allowing me to share your happiness even for a minute. I have smile, cried, and laughed at the wonderful photos of you guys Beautiful 'Black Love'. It is clear to me that you must be a god-fearing man for there are many, male or female that wouldn't have done with you did for love. I have battled 6 years of illness that's lead to 11 surgeries and only by the grace of God and his mercy, I am here. 3 yrs into something I didn't do nor wish upon myself my husband one day just walked out bc he didn't like the person I became when I got sick, as if I have any control over what God had in store for my life before I was even in my mother's womb. The blessing in it all was, 2 months after my ex walked out, the doctors started finding the problems, henceforth, I now know that sometimes we can have the wrong person in our lives that actually blocks your healing/blessings. I lost nothing but won everything. Hats off again to you and your family has my sympathy and will definitely be in my prayers.

First off sorry to Chris for his lost. I don't see how he is a hero for doing something he should have done a long time ago. He knew she was dying so marrying her was easy. If he had marry her knowing that she was going to live for a long time and he had to take care of her will be heroic. This is no great love story, you are all blind.

WOW!! That was outright ignorant! None of us know their full life's story, or why the marriage happened when it did and not a day sooner. Quite frankly that is none of the world's business!! What is noble is the fact that he did marry her and didn't walk away from her during her last days here on earth.

Seriously......you had the nerve to post this. I dont know this couple but I am almost positive that when she was diagnosed she probably hoped and prayed she would beat this illness. They were probably already engaged but no woman wants to be married in this condition and she is the one who probably put the wedding off. Once they realized the inevitable it was very noble and heroic of both of them to embrace what lay ahead for them the way they did. Not only was her life filled with joy right up until the end but her husband and family not only got to celebrate their union but Keasha's life as well. Shame on you for trying to belittle that .

I didn't know this strong beautiful black woman but looking at the footage of the wedding and her pics, I feel as if I did!!!! She was beautiful inside and out. Fun loving, full of sincere beauty from within and doing the very thing that brought her joy which was dancing. Even though the sickness took it's toll, she still had enough courage to marry the man of her dreams. She could of thought not to burden you Chris with health concerns but the LOVE IS/WAS GENUINE. I didn't see this as Chris trying to be a hero, I see it as you were doing what possibly had been planned but for some reason placed on HOLD! The pics of you two together speaks volumes to me, YALL WERE HAPPY TOGETHER!!! (To ksp, U MISSED IT!!!) Chris, I love pics and I watched your smile before the wedding and after...IT NEVER CHANGED, YOU LOVED THIS BEAUTIFUL BLACK WOMAN! May God grant you peace that no man will understand.

I read about this tragedy but after seeing these videos I see the deep love and compassion that is shared between a man and women. The heart of true love is shown through the love she is able to give at all times of happiness and sickness. I know it has to be hard to loose someone Chris that you love so much, but you have shared a love like no other. God picked her for you and I know your lives were enriched. I will pray that GOD see you through this but when you look back on your lives together it will fill with happiness. WOW, I wish that I will experience this type of love before I am called home to be with my GOD. Many prayers for you and your family but feel the love in your heart forever.

The bible says when a man findeth a wife he findeth a good thing! The same is true for woman. I had to take a moment and compose myself because I became so full. This is truly a love story and it helps renew my faith in real unconditional love. In goodtimes and bad and through sickness and health. Keasha and Chris lived those words before the ceremony even took place. You can just see it in them. No man knows the day nor the hour. I can't express the unselfishness on both their parts. They traveled on a journey in a short amount of time some of us may never experience in a whole lifetime. Im grateful they shared and I pray that I experince a love like theirs someday.

I cried, this made my heart so full. I was always wondering were there anymore black men left that loved so hard and so deep and true...I can't stop crying. I feel so sad that she had to go to soon. I've always yearned for strong, passionate true love and this man loved her no matter what and he proved it. I pray for his strength to move foward only God can help in this matter. Someone shared this story on FB and I'm so glad she did. I'm so lost for words right now. He is what true love demostrates.

My heart goes out to the Draft and Rutlege family! Chris, my brother in Christ, I did not know you personally but God speed to you! I'm a married man of 11 years and I could not imagine losing my wife, however I can identify with your pain! I lost my mother suddenly to cervical cancer on 12-21-2007! She was diagnosed 4-16-2007 and given false hope that she would beat it! God never brings you to it and not bring you through it! God bless you my brother and peace be still!

WOW...There are not enough words to express how Chris & Kesha's story has touched me. I have a similar story with the exception that Mark & I did not have a chance to marry. In 1985, I met Mark at the Riverfest festivity. I was working beside with while we were in our booth. He was selling T-shirts and so was I. Mark began flirting with and teasing me jokingly. He would asked me out a date and I would turn him down because I was in college and did to not have time except for the weekend. We exchanged phone numbers and began a wonderful friendship. He was a loving caring person that I grew fond of. My kids adored him. He was a loving father who had three of his own. There was song that Mark and I loved called "Weekend Girl." ....can't remember the artist name but it was our favorite song because I would not go out with Mark until the weekend. Nearly a into our friendship, Mark and I spent New Years Eve together and that's when I fell in love with him. There was nothing that Mark would not do for me. He was the man I knew I could live with for the rest of my life. Unfortuately things did not pan out as I would have wanted but Mark and I remained friends for a decade. In 1998, I decided to leave Ohio to attend to pursue my Bachelors Degree, Mark was not happy about me leaving but understood. He was always supportive of my dreams. In November 1999, Mark informed me that he was battling stomach cancer. Devastating of the news, I wanted to quit school to take care of him but he would not let me. Every trip back home I made sure I would spend time with him. In the summer of 2000, I spent my time caring for Mark. In August 2000, I had to return school but in October 2000, I spent my birthday with him. The following month in November, his best friend Bomani called me with the sad news that Mark had passed. Mark was the man I should have married. He was everything I desired in a man. He was kind, loving, caring, and devoted to his children and love the business of meeting people and founded a Book Fair every year during the the Black History month. Mark remains in my heart and always will. He was the love of my life who hold dear to my heart. To Chris, if you ever find love again, don't wait to marry her...cherish her for as long as you both live. Lettie

It was my pleasure to have a CHANCE to VIEW the GIFT of GOD at WORK. When a MAN finds a wife HE OBTAINS FAVOR with the LORD. Chris and Keasha both are GIFTS of the LORD. I pray that the POWERFUL message REACHES others before it is to late. Chris I pray that you will NOT allow this GLORIOUS moment in time not go by without writing the STORY of HOW you OVERCOME the pain that other MEN may learn from your EXAMPLE. Thank you for BEING the ONE to teach others and allowing me and so many others to share the LOVE that GOD has given the both of you. I pray that all that she is to you will give others HOPE that may be facing like fate of life. YOU HAVE GIVEN HOPE to the HOPELESS. THANK YOU for being a light in DARK PLACES of others. YOU and YOUR LOVELY BRIDE have CHANGE THE WORLD. As she has transition from this place she has left her story for GOD'S GLORY. Be BLESS in all that you do to continue to UPLIFT WHO SHE IS TO YOU and those who LOVES you BOTH.

I started crying the minute the music started playing. If this story didn't in some way teach you something, then you missed a whole lot. I have no clue what its like to lose a spouse, but in hearing this story it makes me take my vows a whole lot more serious. I have been married going on 4 yrs and I am still in love. This shows me that no matter what goes on in life to cherish those who are in it, From the wedding video to the pictures memorial she always had a smile on her face, Even when she got sick she still had that beautiful smile, This came at the right time. I am beginning a new chapter in my life and this gives me hope. There are still people in love (especially black folks) and I want to continue to improve in my relationship, My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Rutledge and Draft familes. I pray that God gives you strength in the midst of this storm, Know that He has an angel watching over you from heaven, Thank you for sharing this with the world. i really needed this.

I so wanted to take a minute to address the carelessness of the tounge. (ksp) It wasn't about him being a hero. It was about him loving her through it ALL; UNCONDITIONALLY! What a beautiful statement of love. God always works in his own way to show us he still exists, and we are the ones in a state of confusion, In John chapter 4, it says this illness is not unto your death and certainly it applies here. This lovely lady will live forever, and the Draft's have personified true love through God... I will be praying for your Strength Mr. Draft, God will gird you up and make you strong, it will be a while before you realize what you have given to the average man in a relationship, but one day you will realize that your sacrifice was not in vein, you will always be my hero... God bless you and your family. Oh by the way, I have been a little hesitant about asking my lady to marry me, I'm 66 and been divorced for over 25 years and finding it hard to let go of my independence, you have inspired me and I'll be asking her tonight....

I have never heard about this beautiful couple (inside and out beautiful), until today as I read website news. Chris and Kiesha seemed to be such a deserving young couple full of promise. My heart goes out to you, Chris, and your family. Together, it seems you created some pretty amazing "happenings". To Chris: Kiesha may have been in your life for a short time, but the essence of who she is and her soul will always be with you. There was a divine purpose why you two met and created the short life you had together. God will reveal the reason. Every day was precious and you are/were both blessed to have found each other. My deepest condolences to you and your families ~ Jean

I totally agree with "Insightful One". Maybe Chris and Keisha's true message, and reason why they got together, was to express how important and precious a loving relationship can be. Live every day like it's your last and appreciate every moment two loving beings have on earth. Really, appreciate all the loving relationships we all have with others. Live in the present!

Marrying my childhood sweetheart, we've had many highs and lows in our relationship and our love is as strong today as it was the day we married. I said all that to say this. You and Keisha experienced the same kind of love in your marriage of one month. Many people spend a lifetime without experiencing that kind of love. Chris, know this. YOU ARE TRULY A HERO! Not because of your status as an NFLer, but because of your status as: HUSBAND, LOVER, FRIEND and most of all, MAN!!!!! Keep your love forever and be blessed! Mary Copeland-Lampkin

Chris...you truly have the Lord Jesus Christ in your heart. Cancer is a very obnoxious disease when it makes its presence known. It robs one of all that it can, but the one thing that it cannot take away is one's will to smile and live out their life til there is no more. You can see that on Keasha's face in your wedding video and each of the beautiful pictures of her. One can tell that she was a very happy person. Her smile says it all. What an awesome gift to give a woman to be made one with her spouse as a wife. To be made ONE no matter what the issues are in this life. I don't know you at all but I can only believe that you chose to do that because of your deep and abiding love for your Keasha. That is what Christ did for us. What an amazing testimony. This has touched my heart so much because 2 years ago today I lost my baby sister, 29 years old, to cancer. She never got to experience the love of a man so genuine. I wish she could have. Thank you, thank you, thank you for proving to the world that there are some men out there that truly have the heart and love of Christ in them. I pray that the God of heaven and earth will mend your broken heart and fill it with the love of your family and friends as you mourn the loss of your best friend and wife Keasha Draft.

I've typed an entire book to let you know that there are people today that married and are complacent in their life that do not understand that some women would give their life despite k's illness just to be love the way that you loved her to death do you part you tokk those ever so faithful vows and made them what they are and what they stood for.I was only browsing the internet and came up on the story of a life time and yours was must i say one to remember through the good and the bad through the thick and the thin but most importantly for better or for worst through death do us partYou could only see the joy and the happiness t hrough the video and the clips if pictures she was in deed happy through it all may god continue to bless and hold you through it all and may in time your heart be made whole. love may endure for a night but joy cometh in the morning! be bleesed and I love you for your story! We all have people in our lives here with us who takes you for granted and wer are here but I felt an empytiness in my heart I would have love to felt the love that was shared between you two, I've been married for

I returned to work on 01/03/12 and saw the story.......My heart has been so-o-o-o heavy since then. I am hurting for both of them but have seen the true meaning of 'UNCONDITIONAL LOVE'. It has hurt me so, that I watch both videos daily - the wedding and the tribute to Keasha. I will FOREVER pray for Chris, Keasha and every member of their families. Chris, know that Keasha is sitting high and is smiling down at you. You two will always have each other's love & memories.
